20210811 Wednesday of the 19th week in Ordinary time - living in a community - From my homily for the Missionaries of Charity sisters -

 

 

For the last few days, our congregation has had an International Provincial Superior conference. We call it the General Conference, which we hold every two years. We have over 30 provinces in over 50 countries so that it takes nearly 50 years to have the Conference in the same country again. We had the Conference in Busan Korea in 2019. This year we have the Conference by Zoom on the internet. 

We are having 2 hours of 9 sessions in 3 months and three sessions in each month. Now we have finished six sessions. I am not supposed to join the Conference, but I was requested to participate as a visual listener. My role is to draw a picture at every session. I begin drawing when the session starts and finish it a little before the end of the session. What I draw is the flow and essential points of the session. Then at the very last moment, all attendants watch the picture with my short comments on that. Then, at the opening prayer of the next session, we watch the picture again with music for 10 minutes. After the opening prayer, each attendant sends one word that comes up in their mind to the staff. 

Can you guess what word they have chosen the most? If you have the same thing in your congregation, what word do you think would be chosen the most by you, sisters?

I could see the words like Family, Harmony, Home, Together, Brotherhood in our sessions. I could find out how much our congregation values "the communal spirit", considering each other as a family member, and thinking of our congregation as one family. It was a great experience to witness that, and I was so impressed and found myself how much I love my congregation. I think all communities gathered in God's name would be the same, and I think your congregation would be the same as well.

However, when I came back to my everyday life after the sessions, I instantly found that all my problems and conflicts against other brothers and the congregation standstill beside me.

Including me, we all want to be one family with a warm communal spirit. Then why do we have to suffer from all those difficulties which come from the relationship? It has been and is and might still be too much burden for me. Sometimes it pushes me too harsh so that I could hardly breathe.

While I was reflecting on today's Gospel and preparing the homily, I found that it seems like today's Gospel tells me about what community is all about. 

I found that community is not supposed to be a paradise where everybody is satisfied and happy all the time. It is the place where people meet, talk, work together, and It is the place where people have conflicts and fights and sin against one another, as we see in the Gospel today. But at the same time, It is the place where people take along, listen to, bind on one another, and It is the place where people ask forgiveness and gives forgiveness. The community is our battlefield but also our school. It is not easy to live in a community for everyone. However, we suffer but learn many essential things in the community, such as asking and giving forgiveness. 

Then most importantly, the community is where we can gather and pray in God's name. All our experiences in the community, sweet or bitter, enjoyable or painful, whatever they are, all eventually go to God, and I can tell it all becomes our prayer. There is no other way they direct. They only go to God because God is in the midst of us. 

So, I remind myself that all I am experiencing in the community is direct to God so that it becomes my prayer, a natural, alive prayer. I want to verify again with you sisters that whatever we experience in the community, we would not let ourselves down by that, and would not forget that it is our prayer, a fabulous alive prayer, under just one condition, that is we gather into the community in God's name.
